«THE ROLE OF LEARNING VOCABULARIES IN
TEACHING ENGLISH»
ABSTRACT:
Learning vocabulary is an essential part in any foreign languages
mastering as the meanings of new words are very often emphasized, whether in
books or in classrooms. In addition, . It is difficult to communicate ideas without a
good range of vocabulary. In this following article, I will try to illuminate the role of
vocabulary in teaching English and explaining many techniques used by English
teachers while teaching English as a second foreign language.

INTRODUCTION:
“Vocabulary acquisition is the largest and most important task
facing the language learner.”
(Swan and Walter 1984)
Human being‘s language is based on the vocabulary, which consists of the three
essential components —pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Grammar is
important to provide the overall patterns, pronunciation is vital aspect to
communicate clearly as well as it contributes to how an individual is understood by
the listener , and the vocabulary is the basic material to put into the patterns, cause
there is no sentence, no communication, and even no language without vocabulary.
Moreover, it is very important factor for all people who learn a language to
understand and improve vocabularies because the more vocabulary we know the
better we can understand the meaning of the words. According to famous English

linguist, Wilkins, ―out grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary
nothing can be conveyed. (Wilkins, 1987, p.135). It is clear that vocabulary is the soul
of language or we can say it is the heart of language. As in human body heart supplies
the blood to whole of the body in the same way vocabulary provides important
elements for the comprehension of global understanding through the languages. A
learner or a teacher should have a wide range of vocabulary command for easy
communication. Every language has vocabularies. Without vocabularies we cannot
produce any language of the world. Moreover, we can say that the vocabulary is
important because it’s the basis of all language. It’s the raw building blocks that we
can use to express our thoughts and ideas, share information, understand others and
grow personal relationships.
It goes without saying that vocabulary plays a pivotal role in every endeavour to learn
a new language. For instance, English is the commanding and main communication
language of the world and we cannot teach or learn English without vocabulary.
Because English is the richest language of the world and the numbers of words
recorded in the oxford English dictionary are near about half a million. It means that
vocabulary is the most important element in learning well English as a foreign
language as one of three basic parts (phonetics, vocabulary and grammar).Therefore,
to a great extent, people's ability of listening, speaking, reading, writing and
translating is all influenced by the vocabulary. As Nations said: ''In English as a second
language (ESL) and English as a foreign language (EFL) learning vocabulary items plays
a vital role in all language skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing)''
(Nation,2011)
Vocabulary is the most necessary factor when it comes to reading comprehension,
both for native and non-native speakers. Without vocabulary, it is a difficult to
understand the meaning of the text. To understand the meaning of the text requires
looking up the words in a dictionary, guessing the meaning of the words from their

context. This can be disappointing, disheartening and also shatter reader's
confidence. Vocabulary teaching is a process, but its aims are clear: not only make
college students memorize words as much as possible, but also make them master
their skills of vocabulary memorizing and train their ability of guessing
words‘ meaning from contexts. In order to teach English effectively, strategies are
very important.
It is claimed as similar evidence when it comes to listening skills for the language
listeners , if listeners have never seen or heard a particular piece of vocabulary in a
second language, it will be much harder to recognise and decode the sounds and
therefore extract the meaning. In addition, Vocabulary is also important factor in
ultimately expression; having an extensive vocabulary will help speakers express
themselves clearly and communicate well with clarity, a linguistic vocabulary is also
identical to a thinking vocabulary meaning that speakers will be able to think concise
thoughts with precision. That's why, teacher must be responsible to teach young
learners vocabulary and they should use different methods during teaching new
foreign language. So, an English teachers should utilize the techniques of teaching
vocabulary which are suitable for the students.
In my opinion, as a young tutor, during teaching vocabulary of language, it is
absolutely compulsory to take into account the students’ level and needs. Clearly,
pedagogues should prepare and find out the appropriate techniques, which will be
implemented to the students. A good teacher should prepare himself or herself with
various and up-to-date techniques. Teachers need to be able to master the material
in order to be understood by students, and make them interested and happy in the
teaching and learning process in the classroom. The teachers should be concerned
that teaching vocabulary is something new and different from student’s native
language. In addition, they also have to take into account that teaching English for
young learners is different from adults. The teachers have to know the characteristics

of his\her learners. They moreoverneed to prepare good techniques and suitable
material in order to gain the target of language teaching.
To summerize, teaching vocabulary plays an important role in English teaching as a
second foreign language, so to improve the effectiveness and efficiency, teachers
should not only pay attention learner's learning process but also use some useful
strategies and methods to improve their vocabulary range. Only these ways help to
improve the students‘ language competence and their ability to use English freely in
communication.
