A STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN.COM?
Following an unlikely pairing of the Black Crowes and Jimmy Page for a charity gig at
London’s Café de Paris, the collaborators set out on a mini tour of the USA. A spin-off,
eighteen-track live album may well be the unexpected breakthrough that music fans
have longed for and some parts of the music industry wish would go away.
The album 
Live at the Greek
isn’t available in any record stores. It can only be bought
from a single website – musicmaker.com, but in a multitude of formats. By logging onto
the website, fans can order the double CD for $17.90, or browse through the 30-second
track samples before selecting which ones and in what order they will appear on a
custom-made disk. For those who cannot wait for a mail package, MP3 format files can
be downloaded for $1.00 each. 
Musicmaker claim that this facility is ‘a whole new paradigm shift’ for the industry,
representing the first Internet-only music release by a major act. Musicmaker isn’t
merely selling a few CDs online in parallel with traditional retail business, they have
‘constructed a new business model that the industry is watching closely’.
First they released a single as a taster, which was provided only to those radio
stations that had a website. They then linked those sites to the Musicmaker site. When
a radio listener hears the single and buys the music through the respective websites,
the radio station receives a commission on the sale, providing a clear incentive for them
to play the record and to promote the website. The effect? The single entered the Top
10 US Radio and Records Rock chart, reached number 15 on Billboard’s Rock Track
chart and number 14 on the album network. Pretty impressive for a record made by
an artist who is not associated with singles and for a product that is not available to
browsers in high-street shops!

Table 9.1 shows four possible modes of relating and examples of the
technologies that enable such means of communicating. The technological
and social changes witnessed over the past thirty years has blurred the
distinction between public and private communication and between senders
and receivers (McQuail, 1987 – see Figure 9.1).
Interactive advertising can use interactive media to qualify sales leads, turn
customer prospects into purchasers, lower marketing costs, and create new
sales channels. This presents a challenge for marketing specialists, who have
to become expert in advertising fundamentals and interactivity – see Boxes
9.7–9.12.
