Please read the extract from a 2019 research into the “43 Britain’s oldest companies”. 
“
These 100-year-old British brands have left legacies spanning over a century. Most continue to 
stand firm and are famous UK companies, even if all their products and services are not
” Here is 
a list of four firms that are over 100-year-old British brands, which have left legacies spanning 
over a century.

Assume that you have been hired as a corporate consultant to examine traditional brands 
in the UK. Select ONE company from the list of 43 and ONE new startup company. Write a 
report that contains a rigorous analysis of the following issues:

Identify (i) a firm from the UK that is over 100 years old, which is either operating now, 
or has operated in the past and (ii) a startup company created since 1/1/2000 [i.e. two 
companies (1 old, 1 new) in total]. Compare and contrast the firms’ organisation chart 
(hierarchy) i.e. board of directors. 

Compare and contrast the firms’ function and activities, system of corporate 
governance, and how the firms are owned (be this through shareholders, by customers, 
or by the state etc.). 

Critically discuss how the firms’ ownership structure has influenced how it has been 
governed and operated. 

How effective are the firms’ system of corporate governance? Identify whether either 
firm has faced any corporate governance challenges. Discuss how the system of 
corporate governance of the firms could be enhanced. 
Working in groups of five, your task is to write a Group Report that contains a rigorous 
analysis of the relevant issues on corporate governance listed above. The Report must be 
<=4,000 words in length. It may include appendices that do not contribute towards the 
word count. 
Please submit the Group Report electronically (TurnItIn).

Length should be a maximum of 4,000 words (- or + 10%) (excluding references).


It must include correct and appropriate referencing, which will influence marks. Students
