Glossary 
SECTION 1 
A note on country house life 
Manderley was a very large house in the country. Like many English 
country houses, Manderley was built with the front of the Main Block 
facing south. The two wings were at each end of the Main Block and 
faced east and west. 
The main rooms were in the centre block. These were a large 
hall with a long gallery running round above it; the dining-room; the 
morning-room; and the library. The bedrooms were in the wings 
and the kitchens and servants' rooms were at the back of the house 
facing north. The terrace was a flat walk built above the level of the 
gardens and it ran round the front of the house and the outside of the 
west wing. 
Many servants were needed to look after such a large house, to 
make the food and clean all the rooms. The housekeeper organized the 
work of these servants and made sure it was properly done. There were 
also servants who worked in the gardens and on the land belonging to 
the house. 
There was a lot of business to be done at Manderley looking after 
the farms, woods and streams which belonged to the house. The 
person who was responsible for this work was the agent. 
At Manderley, some things were done every day at the same 
time and in the same place. Meals were served in the dining-room at 
fixed times. After breakfast people sat in the morning-room, and after 
dinner they sat in the library. Tea was served in the library but, if the 
weather was good, tea might be served on the lawn. Sometimes food 
was taken out into the woods or down by the sea and the meal was 
called a picnic. 
Friends of the family often came to visit in the afternoon. They did 
not need to be invited and when they came, they were usually asked to 
stay for tea. Lots of sandwiches and cakes were prepared every day for 
the afternoon tea. 
Dinner in the evening was a special meal and visitors did not come 
in the evening unless they were invited. They wore evening clothes 
and spent the whole evening eating the meal in the dining-room and 
taking coffee in the library afterwards.

Up to the time of the Second World War, there were many houses 
in England like Manderley. But since the 1940s, they have become 
fewer and fewer. The owners of the houses which are left have, in 
most cases, opened them at fixed times for sightseers and tourists who 
pay to go into the houses and see the valuable paintings, furniture and 
ornaments.
