students were killed; eight were wounded, some seriously. Included in the dead and injured 
were some not even near the scene of confrontation, on their way to class, but in the dis-
tant line of fire. Some, like Sandra Schewer, who was shot 4 0 0 feet away, and, ironically, 
Bill Schroeder, an ROTC student, were also shot, not protesting, but just victims of "collat-
eral damage." 
One soldier later said, "My mind was telling me this is not right, but I fired on the in-
dividual, he dropped." No one was ever held responsible for these murders. An iconic photo 
of this event showed a young woman screaming in horror over the body of a fallen student. 
It also mobilized further antiwar sentiment in the United States. 
Less well-known than the Kent State massacre was a similar event occurring only ten 
days later at Jackson State College in Mississippi, where three students were killed and 
twelve wounded by hundreds of shots fired on black students by National Guardsmen oc-
cupying their campus. 
In contrast to these lethal encounters, most of the activities during the nationwide 
student strikes in May 1 9 7 0 were relatively peaceful, although there were some cases of 
disruption and violence. In many cases, state authorities took measures to avert violence. 
In California, Governor Ronald Reagan shut down all twenty-eight campuses of the uni-
versity and state college systems for four days. Guardsmen were sent onto the campuses of 
the universities of Kentucky, South Carolina, Illinois at Urbana, and Wisconsin at Madi-
son. There were confrontations at Berkeley, the University of Maryland at College Park, 
and other places. At Fresno State College in California, a firebomb destroyed a million-
dollar computer center.
