Unit Objectives 
At the end of this unit, you will be able to:

Explain when to apply IGST, CGST & SGST in a GST Transaction. 
8.2.1 GST 
Under GST, '
Place of Supply
' defines whether the transaction will be counted as intra-state or inter-
state and are accordingly SGST, CGST & IGST are levied. Under 
GST
, the point of taxation, i.e., the 
liability to pay 
GST
will arise at the time of 
supply
as determined for goods and services. 
Therefore under GST, there are three levels of tax, IGST, CGST & SGST and based on the "place of 
supply" so determined the respective tax will be levied. IGST is levied where the transaction is inter-
state, and CGST & SGST are levied where the transaction is intra-state. For understanding the 'Place 
of Supply for Services', the following two concepts become critical:

Recipient of services-Location

Supplier of services-Location 
 
Let us understand these two concepts in detail as they will form the base for determining the place of 
supply in case of supply of services:
