When a routing decision is made for parts to be collected from several vendors, the vehicle needs to 
be at the vendor's end based on the actual time of availability. Further back & forth movements needs 
to be avoided to save on transportation costs. The vendor coordination here assumes great 
significance. The concept of a 
Milk Run 
was first popularized in the auto sector by Toyota Motor 
Company, Japan, wherein the vehicle was routed to its vendors each day to collect the parts required 
for daily Production and feed it to the line Just in Time & Just in Sequence( seats, tyres, etc.) 
The concept is very similar to a milkman delivering milk each morning to several households through 
a particular routing whereby he minimizes both the time elapsed, and distance travelled. 
The essential skills required by a vendor coordinator are: 
•
Effective interpersonal and communication skills. 
•
Project management skills including best practices of project management
•
Knowledge of project management principles. 
•
Complete information on all aspects of the project area. 
•
Influence and negotiation skills
