PROBLEM 7: SOFTWARE NOT RUNNING CORRECTLY
Description: Some software that was previously running is no longer running correctly.
Steps to determine the problem:
1. View the messages and audit logs to see if the software is causing errors.
2. Check your yum log or your updates to see if the software is in need of an update.
3. Examine the software’s configuration and/or rules file(s) (if any) and see if they have 
been inappropriately modified.
4. View the software’s website to see if known errors have been found recently.
Short-term solution: Using yum, upgrade the software. If this fails, attempt to remove 
the software and install it anew, possibly moving to a newer version.
Long-term solution: If the software comes with support, contact the support team and 
detail the problem. Alternatively, if there is a website that permits problem uploads, upload 
the problem there. Explain what you tried to do when it failed and any modifications made 
to the software since the installation.
PROBLEM 8: DEVICE FAILURE
Description: Hardware device is not functioning.
Steps to determine the problem:
1. Check the device’s physical connection(s) to the computer.
2. Make sure the device is turned on, or if the device has its own power source, make 
sure it is plugged in or that the battery is adequate.
3. Make sure the device’s driver software is installed.

4. Check the boot log and messages log file to see if an error message was generated at 
the last reboot (or if this is a plug-and-play device, when the device was connected).
5. If the device uses a service, see if the service is running.
Short-term solution: Restart any necessary service. Disconnect and reconnect the device 
and check the power. Reboot the computer.
Long-term solution: Connect the device to another computer to see if it works from 
there. If so, check the port/connection on the computer where it was not working. Replace 
the device driver on that computer. If the device still does not work on different computers, 
then replace the device.
