Let’s get together
I believe that people matter! My friends and family matter to me very much. The way I show the people in my life that they matter to me is by bringing them together. It is what I do. In the particularly hectic scheduling of life, I am committed to making sure that I take the time to get together with those that I care about. Whether it’s a holiday gathering, my street’s annual block party, lunch with a girlfriend, a going-away party for a friend at work, an impromptu weekend barbeque, or organizing an out-of-town family reunion, I believe it is so important to stay involved with the people in our lives. Really connecting with people is so much more than sending a text message or making a quick phone call to say hello. Don’t get me wrong, these are a means to help us stay connected and I use these things as well. But what I am talking about is being connected with people on a deeper level through a good old-fashioned get- together; where people see each other face to face. I strongly believe that it is the physical act of getting together and making the time that this involves that means the most to people.
I had a great example of this in my life while I was growing up. My parents threw one heck of a party! Many of my fondest memories are those which involved the gathering of family and friends in our home. I remember them well. My parents would have a party and along with all the food (and there was always WAY too much food) it was the way that people felt and were made to feel at those gatherings that made all the difference in the world. They were welcomed with a warm embrace and a friendly hello. They felt comfortable and were made to feel “at home.”
This is the way I want to make the people in my life feel. I want them to feel that they are welcome, that they are important to me and for them to know that I want to spend my time with them. Do I achieve what my parents did all those years ago? I don’t know. But what I do know is that when there is a party at my house everyone that can make it does. And that is good enough for me.
