Athletics is divided into four main types of events: running track events, such as the 100 meter sprint, the 400 meter hurdles, or relay (team event) sprints; field events, which are divided into throwing (the shot put, the discus, the javelin), and jumping (the long jump, the triple jump, the high jump, pole vault), combined events, such as walking, or the marathon.
Michael, 15, who lives near the Olympic stadium in Stratford, is one of the lucky sports fans who got tickets to watch the games. He wants to see many different sports. “I play football and tennis and go swimming and cycling all the time with my friends; so, of course, I will watch some of those on TV. However, the Olympics started with athletics, so the most interesting thing for me about the Olympics is athletics. I run the 400 metres at school and I’m good at the long jump, so I’m looking forward to watching the track and field events in the stadium. My sister does gymnastics, and would love to do equestrian, although she has never tried it, so she will want to watch those. I’m not interested in either, but I think it’s great for her. That’s the best things about the Olympics; there is something for everyone.”
