Activity 6. Watch a video and answer the questions.
The students watch a video about the importance of trees and why to save
them. After watching they answer the questions.
Video script
Turtle: Everybody, please, stay together. Today we are going to learn more
about trees. Who can tell me why we need trees?
Snake: Trees provide us shade on a hot day like today.
Turtle: Good, Snake! Anybody else knows why trees are so important?
Mouse: Trees also provide us with food like nuts and fruit.
Cat: And flowers too. And also many animals live there like birds, squirrels
and so many others.
Dog: Not just animals. Wood from trees is used to build houses for us
besides so many other things.
Turtle: Very good! But I still haven't got the answer I am looking for. Why
are trees so important? Anyone? Trees provide us with oxygen we need to
breathe to live.
Dog: Really, Professor? How's that?
Turtle: Our body breathes in oxygen and we breathe out carbon dioxide.
Trees do the opposite. That is trees breathe in carbon dioxide and release
oxygen. In this way trees make sure that we have pure oxygen to breathe,
without which we cannot live.
Cat: Professor, is that why many people say that we should not cut trees,
but plant more trees?
Turtle: Yes, it is very important to protect trees. And we should try to plant
as many trees as we can.

Activity 7. Let's listen to the specialists.
In this activity students will think about the problem of deforestation. They
will use their critical thinking skills. Three students perform the roles of
teachers. Student A - Geography teacher, Student B - Mathematics teacher,
Student C - Ecology teacher. They speak about the importance of trees in
our life and consequences of deforestation. They perform a role play.
Teacher: Geography , please, tell us about rainforests .
Geography : Good morning . Now I’m going to tell about a rainforest . Look
at the map . These are the maps of rainforests. It rains a lot there. That's
why we call it a rainforest. The weather is always wet.
Teacher: Thank you for your information. History come here and give us
some information.
History: Thank you. Now I’m going to tell about
rainforests,
too. But I’m not good at summing, my friend
math will help me to
sum the year. Look at the map. The picture describes the rainforests today.
But look at that picture. Before 1945. My friend, please, can you calculate
how many years ago the rainforests were larger than today?
Math : 74 years ago they were larger than today.
Teacher: It’s very horrible. Ecology, come here and tell us how we can save
rainforests .Why have rainforests become smaller than in 1945?
Ecology: People cut down trees for farms, houses, to make bread, to keep
their houses warm and to make paper. How can we save rainforests?
Teacher : Thank you for your information.

Activity 8. Answer the questions.
The class is divided into two groups. They say the reasons why the
rainforests today are smaller than in 1945.
Possible answers : cut down trees , for farming , burning trees, to keep
people's houses warm , to make paper , to cook , to make bread …
Activity 4 . A letter from a rainforest.
The teacher reads a letter from a rainforest to the students.
Hello my dears . I’m Rainforest . I live a long way . But you know me .You’ve
seen some of my parts . You use my papers every time . People cut down
my trees for farming , to make bread , to cook , to keep their houses warm
and to make paper. Over the past 70 years people cut down almost 50% of
the rainforests . Paper comes from trees . When they use a lot of paper ,
people must cut down a lot of trees too. I give you clean air and oxygen .
My trees are homes for many animals and birds. I’m very important for you.
My trees are my children. So I’m worried about them and you.
Your sincerely,
Rainforest
Activity 9. Work in pairs. Match the pictures to the expressions. How can we
help rainforests?
The students match the pictures to the word combinations and answer the
question using words : use both sides of paper , use old paper to clean
windows , don’t write on the desks in school , plant trees.
A.
B.
C. D.
Post-stage
V. Conclusion (10 min)
Activity 10. Work with groups . Complete the poster.
In this activity the students are given less-controlled practice in writing
about rain forests and are offered an opportunity to work cooperatively
https://t.me/eltresources
and creatively. In groups they should complete posters working in their
exercise books.
Rain forests need your help.
What are rain forests?
(Write 1-2 sentences).
Where are they?
Why are they important?
What’s happening?
(What’s the problem?)
What can you do?
(
e.g.
Buy recycled paper...)
Home work (2 min): The students look at the homework on Page 109. The
teacher checks that everybody understands what to do with the task.
If necessary, the teacher explains how to do the homework
