At the theatre 

There are many theatres in Tashkent and they are very popular with the public. Theatre 

lovers don’t miss any new performance at Uzbek National Academic Drama Theatre or 

Uzbek State Theatre named after Abror Hidoyatov. Both children and grown-ups like to 

go to the puppet theatre and the circus. Those who are fond of music go to the opera and 

ballet theatre and to the philharmonic 

NATIONAL DRAMA THEATRE 

There are 540 seats in this theatre’s auditorium. Tickets can be purchased in advance or 

directly before the beginning of a play. Performances staged in this theatre are all in 

Uzbek. Those spectators who do not speak Uzbek will be interested in the musical-

choreographic performance “Oh, woman” staged on the basis of the legends and songs 

of Uzbek folklore.

State Opera and Ballet 

Theatre named after Alesher Navoiy is the only Bolshoi Theatre on the whole territory of 

Central and South-Eastern Asia. The history of the theatre started in 1929, when 

amateurs of concert-ethnographic group began to work under the leadership of M.Kari-

Yakubov and founded the professional theatre. In 1939 it was renamed to the Uzbek State 

Opera and Ballet Theatre, and in March of 1948 it was united with Russian theatre and 

called as the State Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Alisher Navoiy. Later, in 1959 

the theatre obtained the status of Academic theatre and in 1966-the status of Bolshoi 

Theatre.
