Lecture semantic classification of words

Archaic and obsolete words stand close to learned words. I.B.Arnold differentiates words with respect to time axis (ось времени) into neologisms and obsolete words.
Archaic and obsolete words are partly or fully out of usage, and can be met only in historical novels and in poetry.
E.g. thou, thy moon damsel
you, your month girl
Randon House Dictionary gives the following differentiation among them:
“obsolete”- no longer in use, esp. out of use for at least a century”; “archaic”-current in an earlier time but rare in present usage”. Also the term “historisms” is used to denote objects and phenomena of the past:
E.g. baldric “belt for a sword, horn, etc.
blazon “coat of arms”
yeoman - a free peasant having land
Thus, obsolete words are words which drop out of the language due to disappearance of the objects of phenomena they denote, e.g. ‘yeoman’ – ‘a man holding and cultivating a small landed estate; a freeholder’. Archaisms are words felt as out-dated and replaced by newer forms and lexemes, e.g. see a knave in sense 1). Historisms are words used mostly in historical novels to bring back the atmosphere of old times, or in professional terminology (in history, archeology, etc.).
The above classes do not exhaust all possible semantic groupings of lexical units in the lexicon but only exemplify some criteria, approaches and categories
