LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH MUSIC

Salimova Nafosat student of English Faculty II, Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages

Abstract: The article examines the question of learning English through music with a few examples.

Key words: music, learning, English, ESL, education, songs, children, vocabulary

Ranging from the initial years of our independence to today’s dramatically altering period our government as well as the state authorities have devoted their primary attention towards enhancing many fields, including teaching fremd languages. Albeit, it is marginally melancholic fact that the data yielded recently reveals that the overall amount of Anglo-phones in our country covers merely 9% of the entire population. From our humble point of view, one of the crucial rationales of this consequence is the comprehension of the pedagogues and methodologists that they still regard the process of instructing foreign languages as an identical process of learning any other subject.

As learners of English, we reckon that learning languages completely diverges from the traditional strategy of learning, i.e., while you learn a foreign language, you not only learn grammatical rules or vocabulary, but the entire history, spirit and culture of the nation whose language you are learning embrace your mind and hence we surmise that teaching a foreign language should no longer include utterly writing down a myriad of rules and structures on the blackboard and learning an enormous amount of vocabulary, yet creating real atmosphere of usage of that language. And the alternative method that we are about to suggest for teaching and learning any foreign language, particularly English, is using music in ESL (English as a second language) classes.

When one of the most well – known English poets Henry Wadsworth Longfellow mentioned that “Music is the universal language of mankind” in 1835, he was no longer up to refer the current position of music. Even though the sorts of music and the tastes of its listeners have dramatically altered throughout decades, Longfellow’s claim is still valid even in today’s world of hi-techs. Apart from providing our minds with spiritual relax and therefore being the world’s simplest pleasures, music possesses an invaluable role in learning a foreign language.

Each and every learner of English regard attempting to pronounce English words as a challenging, even embarrassing situation, yet, a recent study informs that while singing a song, the part of our brain that is specified to languages reveals the same reaction towards music and furthermore, while singing a song we concentrate more on a rhythm and tone, than the words themselves, and this aids to overcome self-consciousness of the learners. Secondly, when speaking fluently, native speakers no longer pause between words, but it appears to be slightly burdensome for a non-native speaker, nevertheless, providing the words and phrases are set into music, we are able to distinguish them much quicker, and this is likely to enhance our speaking skills.

Further and even more pivotally, using music while teaching English in pre-school education also reveals brighter efficiency as it can be organized as a fun, as long as the appropriate songs are opted for young children. The most suitable songs for both children and beginner students should be:

  • not too long (1 – 3 verses are sufficient);

  • not too quick ( should be comfortable for singing along);

  • in average level ( should not include too many new words);

  • clear ( should be easily heard).

And for young children the songs with many rhymes and rhythms are recommended as they might easily caught in mind after being repeated. Moreover, some special songs that are composed aiming to teach specific vocabulary such as numbers (‘Ten in the bed’), animals (‘Old McDonald had a farm’), colors (‘I can sing a rainbow) weather (‘Rain, rain’), days of week (‘Monday, Monday’), are considered to be the best support in accelerating the speed of teaching new vocabulary to children.

At the end of recapitulating the whole afore written facts, we once reaffirm the sentence that our first president used to mention in his speeches that “The future of our country lays on the hands of the youth” and by exemplifying this we indicate that as long as we are the young generation of our country and as long as the most faith of our country is devoted to us, to do our upmost in contributing to the development of our country with our top results in our fields is our sacrosanct duty.
