Learner identification

I have conducted the interview with Nizomiddin who is one of my IELTS students. Nizomiddin is a 22-years-old applicant from Andijan. His future plan is to study abroad. As for Nizomiddin, he is learning English not only for studying but also because of his childhood interest. He is an outgoing and sociable person. So he can easily get on well with others and make friends immediately. He usually spends his lots of time in the National library. He is an only child in the family and his parents work in the foreign country.

Language learning background

Nizomiddin has been learning English for a year. He started learning English deeply from the book called “Round up 1”. However, he learned English at school as well. But there was no change in his English. Therefore, he decided to attend the English tutor individually. In addition to this, in order to enhance his English language skills, in particular, speaking skill, he began attending the speaking club organized by those who were willing to acquire English language in the National library. According to Nizomiddin, he could manage to improve his communication skill, yet he has faced with challenges with grammar rules. According to his answer he has never finished and learned any kind of grammar book. He has just learned them from the context of the books, movies or videos. Nowadays, he is taking English course, involving grammar practice to prepare IELTS exam.

Learning style

Nunan (2000) states that different people prefer different learning styles and ways of acquiring the language. It can be concluded that learning styles depend on one’s character personality, learning environment, educational experience and interests.

While observing Nizomiddin over a few days, I have realized that he likes working and learning in a group consisting of energetic and active learners. In order to identify his ways of learning language clearly, I have interviewed him by asking several questions related to his learning style. From the information collected by questionnaire, it can be seen that he prefers collaborating with others to just learning individually. Usually, he spends time to watch English movies, videos; listening to songs BBC podcasts. As well as he is never afraid of making mistakes.
