RÉSUMÉ
L’immersion est un mode d’apprentissage d’une langue seconde dont la popu-
larité est croissante. Mais encore faut-il s’assurer que la maîtrise de cette langue
seconde ne s’acquiert pas aux dépens d’une compétence véritable dans les autres
matières scolaires, dont les mathématiques. C’est pour répondre à de telles inquié-
tudes en dépassant les habituelles mesures de rendement scolaire que cette étude
sur la compréhension de trois concepts mathématiques – point, distance et cercle –
a été menée. Elle permet de constater, d’une part, qu’il est possible de décrire et d’é-
valuer de façon opérationnelle la compréhension de concepts mathématiques et,
d’autre part, que la compréhension des trois concepts élaborés par les élèves anglo-
phones d’un programme d’immersion française s’avère, sinon parfaite, du moins
suffisante pour reconnaître la qualité et la valeur des apprentissages réalisés.

ABSTRACT
The comprehension of mathematics concepts among Anglophone stu-
dents in French immersion high school

Immersion is an acknowledged popular method of teaching a second language.
Care must be taken, however, to ensure that this second language is not learned to
the detriment of real competence in other subjects, such as mathematics. This study
on the understanding of three mathematical concepts - point, distance and circle -
was carried out in order to meet these concerns by bypassing the usual methods of
assessing academic performance. It shows that on the one hand, the understanding
of mathematical concepts can be described and operationally assessed, and on the
other hand, that while the understanding of the three concepts, eélaboréated by
English-speaking students in a French immersion program, may not be perfect, it is
at least sufficient to acknowledge the qualitéy of the learning accomplished.
