Expedition did not undertake major study of the site 
primarily because of these. In 1982 and 1985 
Karakalpak archaeologists conducted an architectural 
survey combined with local area reconnaissance. Parts 
of the fortifications and some monumental architecture 
were visible on the surface. Akshakhan-kala is perhaps 
the largest, and has proved to be certainly among the 
richest, of the sites known in ancient Khorezm. Based 
on present evidence, it was founded around the 3
rd
century BCE and was abandoned in early Kushan 
times, around the 2nd century CE. The site saw a 
partial re-occupation in Kushan-Afrighid times when a 
donjon was built among the standing ruins of the earlier 
site. The site consists of two parts. A lower enclosure 
was defended by a galleried wall some 6 metres wide

Антропонимы сибирских татар остаются мало-
изученными. Наше исследование антропонимов си-
бирских татар базируется на принципах комплекс-
ного анализа явлений языка и духовной народной 
культуры и при этом опирается на надежный фун-
дамент архивных и полевых исследований. Основ-
ные научно-методические принципы: а) от традици-
онных лингвистических проблем к проблемам куль-
туры, как она преломляется и воплощается в языке, 
его формах и истории, б) привлечение более широ-
кого, исчерпывающего фонда соответствующих ис-
торических фактов и обязательный учет географи-
ческого распределения фактов, в) ареальная и хро-
нологическая классификация материала. Мы опира-
емся на различные методы, выработанные наукой:

(установление родства ИС), ареальный (выявление 
ареалов сходных элементов ИС), сопоставительный

following the line of trace. An upper enclosure was set 
into and onto the north-west corner of the lower 
enclosure. This is heavily fortified with 8 metre square 
two-storeyed towers, the corner ones enlarged, 
galleried curtains with ranks of arrow slits, and a series 
of 
proteichismata
. Complex gateways of the ‘labyrinth 
before wall’ type are visible on the surface on all four 
flanks. The western and southern gates give access to 
the lower enclosure. Those to the west and north open 
onto the exterior of the site. 
Traces of monumental structures are visible within 
the upper enclosure. The most imposing building 
stands at the precise centre of the enclosure and 
consists of two 10 metre square towers flanking a
