So far we listed out some problem definitions that describes the given situation and now we should select the one that describes the problem as accurate as possible. As we examine the list, there is no doubt that the last problem definition describes the problem the most accurately:
How might we redesign our care nursing facility and improve our operations to minimize and further get rid of the issue of senior residents wandering to other rooms?
The reasons behind this choice are factors mentioned the situation and outside factors that affected the researcher’s thinking. The mentioned factors were inability of the nursing facility to set up a proper navigation causing the older senior wander into other rooms mistakenly. Apart from that fact, the problem definition considered the suggestion that was made by facility administrator. The idea was to assign the working staff to look after the senior when they wander and take them back to their own room. While this proposal could work, it would make the staff to do overwork and distract them from their daily job.
Despite these factors provided in the situation that influenced the forming process of problem definition, there are external aspects that contributed largely too. As we identified the core problem which needs to be tackled, I decided to brainstorm in possible solutions in order to derive the problem statement based on it. Of course, the general solution to the issue would be on improving the nursing facility and its operations. But how to do it? That is a big question. Some answers can be to hire more workforces who can supervise the senior residents on the directions of the facility area. In the meantime, there can be some facts not included in the provided case. One is perhaps the nursing facility has allocated the rooms of senior residents in a way that they are located near to the rooms of other residents. Also, the facility might have 3 to 4 floors in which residents are placed in a mixed basis. Solution to this would be to have the senior residents placed in the ground and first floor, while other residents placed in upper levels. Such assumptions triggered my brainstorming process and led to the selection of abovementioned problem definition.
Conclusion
To sum up, this exercise was an interesting activity as I gained the knowledge on the importance of asking “How might we” questions in order to arrive into creative problem solving. Also, I am definitely going to use this method in my workplace as to achieve better solutions to the problems.
