Provide students with a number chart to reference as they collect their items.

Intermediate

Review counting with the students using a number line or class hundreds chart.


Guided Practice (5 minutes)
Pass out plain paper or math work mats along with small manipulatives, or have your students use their objects from their nature collection.
Model making addition sentences with objects. Show students how to write the corresponding numeral under each grouping of objects and write the addition sentence.

Beginning

Model how to write a number sentence on the board.
Provide addition mats or prewritten equations ( ____ + ____ = ) for students to use during this time.

Intermediate

Have students come up and practice creating an equation using objects with your support.


Independent working time (5 minutes)
Have students take out their nature collection bag. Provide sentence strips, pencils, and glue.
Encourage students to sort their groupings into a number sentence, and have them glue the objects on and write the total on the right side of the sentence strip.

Beginning

Prewrite blank equations on the sentence strips. Pair students together to create an equation.

Intermediate

Have students turn and talk to share their work with a peer before they glue their objects.
