TWO LEGENDS
Translated by Nodira Azatova

The journalist's job resembles riding horse of uloq on the one hand and a
plowing horse with hoe on the other. He runs to the job as riding horses and plows
every day as a plowing horse.
I was on duty. When I was working alone in the room, the old woman, cleaner, aunt
Vera, came in.
- 'Is that your desk?' she said somehow sadly.
- Yes, it is.
- Do you smoke?
- Yes, I do.
-Why do you throw the ashes on the floor? If you do not have ash-tray , tell me, I'll
get it for you from home!
I was so ashamed. No, not only for the paper of warning hung on the wall of the
corridor "Respect for cleaner's work". The truth is that I know exactly what the job of
a cleaner is like, as I've been through it.
My Mum was a cleaner. There used to be a camp of pioneers next to our
house. Mum swept the pavements before the sun rose. We my brothers and I splashed
water over. In fact, water splashing is not a difficult job. You would fall into the ditch
on the edge of the road and take the water with aluminum pail splash it. Then my
Mum swept through with the burgan broom tied a long stick on its handle. The skin
of your legs would split because of the cold water in the morning. But that is not the
case also. The case of getting up early in the morning is worse than all. By the end of
half-night, we would be tired wandering in the street as "beaten dog". Just when I
was in dormant sleep, my mother slowly touched:
"Get up my son. The Sun is going to shine soon brightly.
When the other children at your age are sleeping sweet in camping tents, you should
sweep and splash water ... What could I say? It seemed somehow offensive for
me. Time by time, I used to became "devilish‖. Either my head, or legs hurt... My
mother too care of me more than others by some means. She woke up either my
friend, Abduvahid, who slept with us, or my brother instead of me. Sometimes my
father became angry. "Why he doesn‘t work with others? Is he horn headed?" - he
said.
When my elder brother entered the institute, I was in the fifth or sixth
grade. When my brother was a student, he began dislike Mum‘s job. Finally he said:
- All right, Mum leave your job, please...
My mother thought over it.

23
- Are you ashamed of me?-, she said after a while. - I'm not robbing, my son. Is
working guilt for you?
Neither Dad no my brothers spoke.
I did not know what to do, and that day it seemed to me that I became a child
again. When I was a child, my mother slept between me and my brother in the cradle.
In winter lying on a
sandal
I pleaded:
- Mum, tell me a tale, please.
- Oh, my son, I'm tired, please, sleep.
- Tell it, please‖.
"All right, close your eyes and listen ... Once upon a time there was ...
I know where the speech goes.
- Is it a tray again?
- No, the sun ...
-You have already told it.
- I do not know the other ...
- All right, tell then.
- Once upon a time there was the sun.
- Was that our sun?
- Yes, it's ours. So there was the sun. But he did not want to go out on to the
Earth. Every morning he cried to God. There are plenty of dirty things in the world
that I never want to see. God soothed it. You go and shine; there are people who
keep clean the world. Therefore, whoever cleans the world, that will be the best man.
"You are the best, are you?" You always clean the streets .
"Listen to me, my son. Every day the Sun cried to God and said ‗There are bad
people on the earth. I do not want to see them all. God again soothed it. The more you
shine, the more their number decreases, so the bad disappear-, God said.
- Is my brother bad, Mum?
- Why, oh dear?
- He had just crushed the snowman which I have made!"
- No, your brother is good ... The bad people are different.
- What do they look like?
- You understand it when you grow up. Now it's enough, sleep well.
The light of the seventh lamp was lowered, the burning coal, the oil of lamp smelled
inside the house. A little bit dark. I didn‘t want to sleep.
- Mum, tell me the tray, please.
- That‘s enough, sleep ...
- Please, tell me.
- Well, listen. Once upon a time there was a young man in ancient times. He was a
good boy, but once he offended his mother.

24
- What did he do?
- Somehow he offended. Once a neighboring woman was carrying two buckets of
water in the morning , when he got into to the street. The young boy went to pick up
the old woman's tray to help. Instead of thanks the old woman beat the the young boy
with the tray.
- Was it painful?
My Mum kept silent.
- What hurts?,-she said shortly.
- That boy's shoulder.
- Yes. - My mother smiled. Then she sighed.- 'You ,' said the old woman to the young
boy ‖before trying to make good for someone, learn how to make happy your
mother‖
- Did not the boy offend his mother again then?"
- No, he didn‘t. - My mother was silent for a while, and then slowly she continued -
You see, a human must love one‘s relatives first. There are many good people in the
world. There are a lot of them. But if you do not love your mother, your sister, and
your brothers… .
- You also, - I interrupted her.
-"Me ..." my mother laughed. - If you do not love me, you will not be able to love
anyone in the world.
- Our home,- I said talkatively.
My mother didn‘t get angry.
Our home,- she says. - If you do not love our own home, you will not love the sky-
scrapers also.
-Is it not leaking now, Mum?
- From the roof? Your dad repaired it. It will not leak anymore.
It became silent. I dreamt. I think about the hundred storied skyscraper but cannot
imagine what it does look like.
- Mum-, I say slowly. - Is there a hundred storied skyscraper in Tashkent?
- No.
-In Moscow?
-It must be there.
-Is Moscow a big city?
- Yes, it is.
-Is there any bigger one?
-It must be. If you want to see these cities you should love Tashkent. In order to love
Tashkent you should love our Dombraobod, ok?
- Okay. Why?

25
- You can understand it when you grow up. "My mother wiped my forehead. For
some reason she sighed.
I lose my sleep completely.
- Mum, -I said again. - Is the river big, or the sea?
- The sea.
- What about the river?
- It's big enough.
- Is it even bigger than our Konqus?
- It's big.
-Xo‗dja said that there is a river in Chirchik ...
My mother laughs.
-Now, you should sleep, my son.
I do not want to sleep? I think about the rivers.
In summer, -I said remembering,- Vali was nearly drawned in the Konques river. My
brother took him off the water.
Anyway-, said Mum in a thoughtful voice.- Love Konques also.
-Why?
- Because Konques is our canal. We drink water from it.
- If I do so? I can love other rivers also. Am I right?
Mum again laughed.
Certainly.
- I love my puppy?
-Yes, my son.
- Mum, Adham is mad, isn‘t he?
- Why?
"Yesterday, he hit the cat with ice. The cat became lame.
- You shouldn‘t hurt animals. Well, we will sleep.
- Well ... Shall I go to the big cities, when I grow up?
-You go my son, you go.- Mum slowly fell asleep.
I dream of looking at the ceiling at half- lit night. Sometimes I'll go to the big cities
and sometimes swim in the river in my dreams. The cradle of my brother squeaks.
He cries. My Mum wakes up quickly. She shakes the cradle back and force and sings
him lullaby. My Mum sings the lullaby to my little brother but I fell asleep.
The truth is like the air. You breathe in it but you don‘t see it. I thought over,
these two legends told by my Mum again and again in my childhood were true as the
life, as simple as life.
