V10 Page 498
Residence of James S. Boyd No 819 West Main St Norristown Pa Nov 3, 1923 7:46 PM
Mr Boyd a fine will built husky young man came to the door & said he was expecting company, some being already there but he took me inside & we talked for 20 minutes or so & he was very kind & excused himself by saying he saying he was working night & day making speeches & interviewing people in their work to elect the Republican ticket next Tuesday. I would guess him to weigh 200 lbs or over. He said that he was the only child of his parents & that neither he nor his father, Howard, nor his grandfather James S. Boyd, a Penna RR lawyer who built many of the small RRs out of Phila to Newton etc, cared 5 cts for the family genealogy & had no records & if anything, contributing thereto came in, they threw it away. He sd he was with his grandfather once to a lawyer's Banquet in Phila Pa & met a lawyer there who was a noted genealogist who talked to his grandfather about their genealogy & who prepared a record for his grandfather, but he cared nothing for it & didn't preserve it, their idea being that it was not your forebears but what you could do yourselves that counted. Telling him that his great grandfather, Dr Jeremiah Boyd & his
V10 Page 499
parents William & Ann Jack Boyd were from Fayette Co Pa, he said that he so understood but didn't know that any of the Boyds were of sufficient consequence to be written up, but said there was an elaborate sketch of his grandfather in the History of Montgomery Co Pa prepared by a NY firm which could be seen in the public library here in said History which his grandfather presented to the library, he said his great Aunt Mary Pugh who died several yrs ago was one of the thirteen children of Dr Jeremiah Boyd & having leisure had prepared a history of the Boyds which is now in the possession of her son Ed Pugh of Newtown, Bucks Co Pa an intelligent able well known man there who was once, if not now, Secy of the Auto Assn there & who was a poor man & he thought would sell the Hist for a small sum as he didn't care for it & had once asked him if he didn't want to buy it. He said he wouldn't give 5 cts for it & thought Ed wd entertain an offer of $50 for it. He said there was a tradition in the family that they were descended from Mary, Queen of Scots. He said his Boyds were buried in Montgomery Cem to the left of the west end of W Main St. He sd his mother was a Slingluff [best guess] & might be able to give some records.
Left 8:11 PM & walked up to 634 Nobel St & got fr Mark H. Finley the records on pages 485 to 487 incl. Then walked back to W. Main & took St car to:

I left the hotel at 12:15 PM & seeing no street car in sight, walked down here six blocks & passing this number, came back & rung the bell & a fine lithe active matronly woman opened the door & upon asking her in which house Abraham Finley lived said in this one & she was his wife, but he was at the Prison by the C.H. as Sunday warden, but upon asking her if he was not son of Thomas McKenzie Finley, she sd he was & they had his old bible which his sister gave him to keep but said she wanted it back. She went upstairs & brought it down, a medium large leather backed book well preserved except that it is split clear in two just between the old & new testament & the 4 pages of records are on two combined leaves which are entirely detached from the bible which was published by Kimber & Sharpless Phila Pa but without date.
Instead, however of being his father's bible, it is a much greater find being the bible of his grandfather David McKenzie Finley, who in starting it says he is the son of David Finley & Sarah his wife. I copy from the said bible record:

I had a strenuous day at Norristown. I got up at 6:30 & wrote up what I had penciled down Saturday. See page 503. After leaving Elmer E. Finley's, I went to the county jail at 2:50, but Abraham S. Finley was on duty with Sunday services on & said he could see me at his home between 6 & 7 PM. I then walked up to Tremont Cem a full mile & then walked back to Arch & Main & waited 20 minutes for a street car & went to Selma St & took the first road to the left beyond & walked out to Montgomery Cem & hurriedly went pretty much over it, but could not find any Boyds. I then went in the office, see page 516. I then went again to residence of Abraham S. Finley & had an hour with him & his wife, see Pages 507 to 509 inclusive. Mr Finley is a tall slender man with good memory & the picture of health as is his wife. who however is stout & plump. Then arrived back at the Hotel at 7:20 PM & got my dinner finding the big unwholesome Mrs Boyd eating. Then took a St Car to Arch St & walked up 5 blocks to Mrs McCracken's see page 510 to 514. Then went back to the hotel, paid my bill & went to Swede St & took the 11:21 PM trolley for here where I arrived 12:57 AM have written up to date & will go to bed. It is 3:11 AM JVT
