John A. Ferguson Senior High School
MTSS and RTI Process
In an effort to provide students with appropriate services that will assist them in individualizing their education, John A. Ferguson Senior High School has implemented the MTSS Leadership Team and RTI. The purpose of the MTSS Leadership Team is to identify students’ at-risk and provide evidenced-based interventions through a problem solving approach known as RTI or Response to Intervention. In the event that special education services are necessary, the MTSS Leadership Team carefully ensures that a student receives the appropriate screening, testing, and services.
The RTI process consists of three levels or TIERS. Each TIER is designed to problem solve specific student issues and assist the student in making academic gains. The team meets a minimum of once a month, in order to screen, identify students’ at-risk, and problem solve. The MTSS Leadership Team monitors and assists individual counselors to provide the assistance needed for at-risk students, in order to move them through the problem-solving process as effectively and efficiently as possible.
The MTSS Leadership Team consists of:
Ms. Kathy Guerra, Assistant Principal
Dr. Fernando A. Laracuente, Guidance Counselor
Dr. Maria L. Rodriguez, School Psychologist
Dr. Karen Silva-Haj, School Social Worker
Ms. Rachel Sturgeon, Behavior Specialist
Ms. Tracy Pezoldt, TRUST Counselor
Other MTSS Team members are invited on a needs basis depending on the TIER level and issues being addressed.
The MTSS Team also reviews cases for possible evaluation and problem solving due to emergency issues (ex.: Baker Act). The team determines if further services are warranted and will provide any needed intervention that may help stabilize the child to meet his/her educational goals.
