Language learning strategies are the main factors that help ascertain how our students learn a foreign language. A second language is studied in a setting where that language is the main means of communication and where profuse input exists in that language.
A foreign language is studied in an environment where it is not the primary means for daily interaction and where input in that language is limited. Following EFL tradition, the term “L2” is used here to refer to either a second or a foreign language.
Learning styles are the general strategy that students use when learning a new language. Learning style is the biologically and developmentally imposed set of characteristics that make the same teaching method wonderful for some people.
Many studies have found that Hispanic learners are often auditory. Japanese on the other hand are very non auditory.
By definition, extroverts gain their energy from the outside world. They need and enjoy interaction with people and have many friends. In contrast, introverts obtain their energy from the internal world, looking for solitude and tending to have less friends. The teacher can help extroverts and introverts to learn to work together.
One way to do that is by using time limits in the L2 classroom. This can keep extraverts’ enthusiasm to a controllable level. Rotating the leader in L2 discussions gives introverts the opportunity to participate on an equal basis with extraverts.
Intuitive-random students tend to operate in large-scale, abstract and futuristic ways. They enjoy designing theories and new possibilities and prefer to follow their own learning. On the other hand, sensing-sequential learners are grounded in the present. They prefer facts to theories and need guided, specific instruction from the teacher.
The way to teach these two types of learners is to offer different activities: sometimes a highly organized structure for sensing-sequential learners and at other times multiple options for intuitive-random.
