Discuss the Problem’s Symptoms, Seriousness, and Impact
•
Defining the problem may be the only purpose of some meetings. If the problem is
vague, or too broad, or even unknown, then a discussion of its observed symptoms and
perceived seriousness may help the team define the problem.
•
Identifying the exact problem may also help to determine its impact. One consultant
found that average managers focus their evaluation on the problem itself, whereas
“super executives,” who solve problems with apparent ease, view “the problem as
merely a stepping stone to the problem impact—the effect of the problem” (Ford,
1982, p. 6).
