the  consequences  of  this  situation  is  the  insufficient  development  of  Faroese  scientific  and 

technical terminology. 

However,  the  number  of  speakers  does  not  fully  determine  the  diversity  of  spheres  of 

language  functioning.  The  most  important  factor  is  whether  a  given  language  is  the  only 

language of a particular society or not, and what is the very status of this society.  

Thus,  the  number  of  Frisians  (in  the  Netherlands)  significantly  exceeds  the  number  of 

Icelanders,  but  nevertheless,  the  role  of  the  Frisian  language  outside  the  sphere  of  oral 

communication  is  quite  modest:  for  example,  79%  of  Frisians  never  deal  with  Frisian  texts  at 

work, 66% of Frisians never buy Frisian books, the language of instruction in schools (with the 

exception of a part of the l-2-x grades in some schools) is Dutch, etc. It is essential that Frisians 

make  up  less  than  3%  of  the  total  population  of  the  Netherlands,  therefore,  it  is  necessary  to 

obtain  confident  knowledge  of  the  main  language  of  the  country,  in  this  case  it  is  Dutch.  The 

Frisians  are  the  people  who  played  and  play  a  significant  role  in  the  political,  scientific  and 

cultural life of the Netherlands. To some extent, the position of Swedish - one of the two official 

languages  -  is  similar  in  Finland;  Swedish  is  now  spoken  by  about  6%  of  the  country's 

population  (14.3%  in  1880).  It  is  characteristic  that,  according  to the  "optimistic"  forecast, the 

number of people with their  native Swedish  language should decrease  by 7%, according to the 

"pessimistic" one - it will continue to decline by 27%.  

The  next  important  demographic  factor,  that  determines  the  status  of  a  language  in  a 

society  where  another  language  is  the  main  one,  is  the  density,  or  rather  compactness,  of  the 

native  speakers  of  this  language,  which,  in  particular,  determines  the  possibility  of  creating 

autonomous  units,  organizing  teaching  in  the  language,  etc.  It  is  no  coincidence,  for  example, 

that the number of middle-aged and young people for whom Yiddish is their native language is 

now  small;  however,  in  this  case,  the  decisive  factor  in  many  countries  is  not  dispersion,  but 

conscious linguistic assimilation.
