Introduction to Health and Safety at Work

Department managers

Are responsible and held accountable for 
their department’s or area’s health and safety 
performance.
➤
Contact each supervisor frequently (daily) about 
health and safety.
➤
Hold departmental health and safety meetings 
for staff at least once a month.
➤
Make daily observations of supervisors’ health 
and safety activities.
➤
Review and approve all job procedures 
developed as a result of job safety analyses; 
install approved procedures; require each super-
visor to check use of the procedures.
➤
Approve and annually review all departmental 
health and safety risk assessments, rules and 
regulations; maintain strict enforcement; and 
develop plans to ensure employee instruction 
and re-instruction.
➤
Establish acceptable housekeeping standards, 
defi ning specifi c areas of responsibility, assign 
areas to supervisors; make a daily spot check 
of some area; hold formal inspection with super-
visors at least monthly, submit written reports 
with assignments and deadlines for corrections.
➤
Authorize purchases of tools and equipment 
necessary to attain compliance with site specifi -
cations and statutory regulations.

Develop a training plan that includes specifi c job 
instructions for new or transferred employees; 
follow up on training by supervisors.
➤
Review the health and safety performance of their 
area of responsibility.
➤
Personally investigate all lost workday cases and 
signifi cant losses and report to the site manager; 
follow up on corrective action.
➤
Adopt standards for assigning personal protective 
equipment to employees; insist on strict enforce-
ment; and make spot fi eld checks to determine 
compliance.
➤
Evaluate supervisors’ health and safety 
performances.
➤
Develop in each member of management strong 
health and safety attitudes and clear-cut under-
standing of specifi c duties and responsibilities.
➤
Instil, by action, example, and training, a sincere 
health and safety attitude.
➤
Instruct supervisors in site procedures for the 
care and treatment of sick or injured employees.
