direct speech act:
A type of speech act in which the speaker’s intentions are clearly spelled
out. For instance, if a speaker says Clean the house later, her intention is to
get someone to do something, since she uses an imperative sentence, a
form closely linked with a directive. Compare with indirect speech act.
directive:
A type of speech act
in which the intent of the speaker is to get someone
to do something: Please leave or Could you get me another cup of coffee?
discourse marker:
An expression, such as well in Well, I guess you’re right, that really has no
clearly defined meaning but that is used primarily in conversation to
organize what is said or in the case of well to express some hesitation as to
whether the speaker really agrees that the individual being addressed is
right.
disparates:
Individuals (such as a parent and child) between whom an unequal power
relationship exists, with one person having more power than the other.
distal deictic:
A word such as that or those that locates something away from the speaker.
