English consonants
English consonants are classified along three parameters: voicing, place of
articulation, and manner of articulation. To introduce these notions, one
type of consonant – plosives – will be described before the entire range of
consonants in English is presented.

Plosives.
Table 7.1 lists all of the consonant phonemes in English. Across
the top of the table are the places of articulation: the parts of the mouth
involved in the articulation of each phoneme. The left-hand column clas-
sifies the consonants according to their manner of articulation: where the
air flows in the mouth while each consonant is articulated, and the degree
to which the air flows freely or is subject to varying degrees of constriction.
