Table 7.1 lists all of the consonant phonemes in English. Across
the top of the table are the places of articulation:
the parts of the mouth
involved in the articulation of each phoneme. The left-hand column clas-
sifies the consonants according to their manner of articulation: where the
air flows in the mouth while
each consonant is articulated, and the degree
to which the air flows freely or is subject to varying degrees of constriction.
