This chapter concentrates on the functional characteristics of PON and WiMAX topologies and 
the standards deployed in current access networks. Following the evolution of access networks 
and the timely developments in online services, e.g. online gaming, video streaming, internet 
protocol TV (IPTV) etc, potential solutions for enhancing the existing PON and WiMAX 
standards are reviewed. Finally, the techno-economical aspects of these developments are 
discussed, leading to the justification of the trend towards converged optical/wireless schemes.
