Postgraduate education. Until 2012, such education consisted of postgraduate studies (3 years) and doctoral studies (3 years), in 2012-2017, there was a single-stage doctoral program. In the period from 2013 to 2017, only about 360 researchers defended their doctoral theses.

This could not meet the needs of universities and research institutions for qualified scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel. In order to further improve post-university education, expand the opportunities for young people to display their intellectual potential in the course of research activities, as well as after studying the practice of a number of advanced foreign countries, a two-level system of post-university education was introduced on July 1, 2017. First – basic doctorate for the protection of the thesis and awarding the scientific degree of doctor of philosophy in the relevant scientific field (PhD), and the second is the system of doctoral studies leading to the award of scientific degree of doctor of science (Doctor of Science) in a relevant scientific field.
