Hierarchical culture
This culture is based on a multi-level structure for organizing and controlling activities. Leaders here act as coordinators. The working environment is formal, with rigid institutional procedures for leadership. Leadership is based on organized coordination and monitoring, and the culture is characterized by efficiency and predictability. These values ​​include worker coherence and uniformity. Maintaining the smooth running of the organization is important here. The organization's long-term plans are to ensure stability, predictability and profitability. The organization is united by formal rules and company policy. A hierarchical culture dominates large and government organizations and strict rules apply to all aspects of a company's operations. Examples of such organizations are large bureaucratic organizations such as McDonald's or large automobile manufacturing companies such as Ford, which has seventeen levels of management.
Comments and criticism
The ACAI study shows that companies rarely share the same traits of all four cultural types without a single dominant type. However, it is likely that departments within an organization may exhibit sub-dominant traits such as the accounting department having a predominantly hierarchical/control culture while the development team is shaped more by an adhocracy/creativity culture.
