MYSTERY OF AN OLD MINIATURE
Summary
. 
Mystery of an old miniature. 
Miniature collections are seldom exhibited in the muse-
um halls. The curators regard them to be fragile and sensitive even to minor temperature and humid-
ity changes. This “veiling” of the collection hampers research. World renown treasure-museum – the 
Armory in the Moscow Kremlin a significant collection of art miniatures. This collection preserves 
a number of high value works by Russian and foreign masters. With all the wide range of miniatures 
exhibited in the Kremlin collection one callers for a particular interest “a lady’s profile” miniature 
painted with an exquisite mastership by Anselm Lagrenee. We must admit that the craftsmanship of 
the French artist who per formed this image on the ivory plate imitating of glyptics in water-colours, 
is a work to admire. Artist Anselm Francois Lagrenee (1774–1832) worked in Russian empire in 
1817–1825 and was known as miniature master. Count Mikhail Vorontsov and his spouse Elisabeth 
tend to order their portraits with Western-European masters. Comparing the photo of the sculptured 
portrait of Countess Elisabeth Ksaverievna Vorontsova, accomplished by Denis Foyatier in Paris in 
1821, with “portrait of a Lady” (fig. 1) by Anselm Francois Lagrenee from the collection of the Ar-
moury in the Moscow Kremlin we take it for granted, that they both depict one and the same face.
E. K. Vorontsova (1792–1880), maiden name Branitskaya, was born is Belaya Tserkov in 1792. Her 
mother Alexandra Vasilievna Branitskaya (nee Engelgard) was the niece of Gregory Potemkin, Prince 
of Tauriya. Shi was Caterina II’s lady-in-waiting. The town of Belaya Tserkov was property of Branitski 
family as 127 other estates. Her father – Hetman Francisk-Ksaveriy Branitski was a rich landowner.
