GANODERMA FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC HEPATITIS B

Abstract 
Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is a highly contagious partially double stranded DNA 
virus that belongs to the 
hepadnaviruses
family.
Globally, there are 2 billion accumulated incidence of HBV infection with 
more than 300 million individuals are chronically infected with HBV, with high risk 
for the development of end-stage liver complication, such as liver cirrhosis and 
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Although effective vaccine and treatment are available, but most chronic HBV 
patient and inactive carrier are asymptotic but still able to transmit the virus to other. 
With the low diagnostic rate and treatment rate globally, posing a possible risk for the 
public health. This making the WHO target for HBV eradication by 2030 a challenge, 
especially in medium to low-income countries.
Ganoderma lucidum
also known as “LingZhi” or “Reishi” mushroom is a type 
of basidiomycete white rot macrofungi that was used for over 2000 years for its 
medicinal benefits, especially in Ancient China as it was being known as “the 
Miraculous King of Herbs”.
Modern scientific studies have shown that Ganoderma to be hepatoprotective, 
Anti-inflammatory, Anti-HBV and other viruses, and immune-modulating, which 
provide benefit for the management of chronic HBV.
Studies conducted in China have shown that Ganoderma are beneficial as 
adjuvant for the management of chronic hepatitis B infection. 
 
Our team have previous shown that triterpenoids enriched Ganoderma extract 
is beneficial for anti-cancer, enhance antioxidant and hepatoprotective in animal 
study, now we would like to report that our team are now in progress for multi-centre 
study for the efficacy for the triterpenoids enriched Ganoderma extract for the 
management of Chronic HBV infection, with the focus on negative seroconversion 
and hepatoprotective benefits.
