Wuthering Heights is the only novel by the 19th century English writer and poet Emily Brontë and her most famous work. An exemplary plot, innovative use of several narrators, attention to the details of rural life, combined with a romantic interpretation of natural phenomena, vivid imagery and processing of the conventions of the Gothic novel make "Wuthering Heights" the standard of the novel of late romanticism and a classic work of early Victorian literature.
The novel takes place in the moorlands of Yorkshire, which, thanks to this novel, became a tourist attraction in England. 1801 year. A young Londoner, Mr. Lockwood, in search of solitude, settled in a provincial estate called Skvortsov Manor. He decides to visit the neighbor and owner of the estate, Mr. Heathcliff, from the estate of Wuthering Heights. This person behaves rudely, aloof. Despite the cold reception, Lockwood decides to pay a second visit. [2] On the way to Grozovoy Pass, the weather deteriorates, and it starts to snow. The owners did not express much desire to receive the guest for the second time, but Lockwood still gets into the house. Here he discovers other residents of Wuthering Heights: Heathcliff's daughter-in-law, his son's widow, and Hareton Earnshaw. The relationship between the tenants was not very friendly towards each other or towards Lockwood. The narrator wants to leave, but no one wants to accompany him in the dark, when all the paths are covered with snow, and Lockwood remains to spend the night at Heathcliff's house [3]. Zilla, the housekeeper, leads him into a bedroom that hasn't been used for a long time. There Lockwood finds a diary of a certain Catherine Earnshaw, telling the story of two children: Catherine herself and Heathcliff. At night, Lockwood has a terrible dream in which he is haunted by the ghost of the deceased. The next morning he returns to the Skvortsov Manor and falls ill [4].
Spending time in forced idleness during his illness, Mr. Lockwood asks the housekeeper Ellen (Nelly) Dean to tell him about the inhabitants of Wuthering Heights, and finds out that Nelly Dean raised that young girl from the estate herself. She told the tragic story of Heathcliff. Years ago, Mr. Earnshaw, the master of Wuthering Heights, picked up a dying child and accepted him as his son. The boy was named Heathcliff. At first he was brought up with the owner's children, became very friendly with Catherine, but her brother, Hindley, out of jealousy, hated the boy, beat him and mocked him [5]. Hindley was sent to college, and three years later the elder Earnshaw died. [6] Hindley returned to his father's funeral with his wife, he became the new owner of the house and soon sent Heathcliff to work as a simple farm laborer, and then abandoned all worries about his sister, spending all the time with his wife. Heathcliff and Catherine were inseparable until she came to the Lintons, who owned Skvortsov Manor at that time [7]. There she was taught good manners, and she met the Linton children Edgar and Isabella. Catherine's friendship with the Lintons became a bone of contention with Heathcliff, who by that time had grown even more feral [8]. Hindley Earnshaw had a son named Hurton, but immediately after giving birth, Hindley's wife died. Having lost the most precious thing that he had, he started drinking, became violent and turned into a "gloomy, fierce man" [9]. In contrast to Heathcliff, Edgar was distinguished by a noble upbringing, gentleness, kindness and fine manners, which attracted Catherine. She began to openly taunt Heathcliff and reproach him for ignorance, which unwittingly turned against the Lintons. Deep down, realizing her love for him, Catherine decided to marry Edgar Linton. Heathcliff heard her talking to Nellie Dean about this, and immediately, without saying goodbye to anyone, left Wuthering Heights.
Catherine experienced this very hard, but after recovering, she nevertheless married Edgar and left Wuthering Pass, moving to Grange Skvortsov. She took Nelly with her, and little Hareton was left alone in the care of his father Three years later, Heathcliff returned and disturbed the peaceful life of Edgar and Catherine, who was distraught with happiness at the sight of an old friend. It is clear that they loved and still love each other. The Wanderer settled on Wuthering Pass and very often visited the Skvortsov Manor. Hindley at this time continues to drink and play cards, and Heathcliff, who has become rich in three years, supplies him with money. Edgar disliked Heathcliff, but tolerated him for his wife's sake. Isabella Linton falls in love with him, introducing him as a romantic hero. Catherine, who knew well the embittered soul of her friend, tried to dissuade her sister-in-law ("He is a fierce, ruthless man, a man of a wolfish disposition"), but in vain [11]. Isabella at the table in front of everyone says that Catherine is lying and denigrating Heathcliff. Then she makes fun of the girl and informs Heathcliff about her crush in front of her. The poor thing runs away, and he reacts to it this way: “You would have heard about strange things if I had to live with her under the same roof and forever see this sugary, waxen face: the most common thing would be in two days on the third to display rainbow patterns on his whiteness and turn her blue eyes into black - they are disgustingly similar to Linton's eyes ”[1]. However, after this conversation, Heathcliff begins to show the girl signs of attention. Katherine sees this and quarrels with him. The man openly says that he loves her and wants to take revenge on Linton. Ellen, the storyteller, hears this and transmits the conversation to the master. Edgar, not wanting to put up with Heathcliff's society, tries to expel him from his home forever.
As a result of a skirmish between him, Heathcliff and Katherine, the latter has a nervous breakdown [12]. Nellie hides his wife's illness from Edgar, thinking that these are just cunning tricks of the hostess, but the illness intensifies, and when the young man finds out about this, her mental and physical health is in a deplorable state. Meanwhile, Catherine is expecting a baby. In the meantime, Isabella escapes with Heathcliff [13]. She agreed to marry him. After the wedding, his true motives were revealed, and the pampered Isabella faced humiliation, cruelty, and coldness of her husband [14]. Edgar refuses to help his sister, arguing that "she made her own choice." To convey this news to Isabella, Nelly comes to Wuthering Heights. From her, Heathcliff learns about Catherine's illness [15]. Disdaining all precautions, he makes his way to his beloved, who, in a violent riot of feelings, loses her last strength [16]. That same night, Catherine gives birth to a daughter and dies two hours after giving birth.

Heathcliff is beside himself with grief [17]. Isabella soon fled from Heathcliff. Six months after the death of Catherine, her brother Hindley Earnshaw also died. Addicted to the game, he pledged all his property to Heathcliff, and he inherited Wuthering Heights himself, along with his heir - Hurton. [18]
Isabella settled in the vicinity of London. She had a son, whom she named Linton Heathcliff. When he was twelve years old, thirteen years after Catherine's death, his mother died.

When Katie turned 16, in the summer while walking with Nellie, they met Heathcliff and Hareton, who, under the "sensitive guidance" of the owner, turned into an uncouth, illiterate redneck. Heathcliff lured Katie and his nanny to Wuthering Heights, where she met a grown-up Linton, and told Nelly that he planned to marry his son to a girl in order to secure his rights to the Skvortsov Grange and take revenge on the Linton family so hated by him. According to the will, if Edgar has no male heirs, the estate goes to his daughter and her son. A secret love correspondence began between Katie and Linton, which she had to end under pressure from her father and Nelly Dean [22]. Autumn has come. Edgar Linton's health began to slowly deteriorate, causing fears of his daughter. Meanwhile, Heathcliff does not abandon his insidious plans [23]. Filled with pity for Linton Heathcliff, who was seriously ill, Katie, secretly from her family, began to visit him regularly, taking care of an extremely capricious young man [24]. Hurton began to learn to read in order to get the girl's approval, but she still taunts him, causing his anger [25]. The father eventually agrees to meet his daughter with Linton on neutral territory. [26] Linton is completely weak: he is standing on the edge of the grave, he does not even have the strength to stand when meeting with Katie. Frightened by his father, he begs her to continue meeting [27]. In one of these meetings, Heathcliff lures Nelly and Katie to Wuthering Heights and locks them up, not letting them go to the dying Edgar. The poor thing is in mad despair; she is ready for anything, just to say goodbye to the most beloved person - her father, and marries Linton Heathcliff [28]. Despite the fact that even after their marriage, Heathcliff does not let them go, they still manage to get out of Wuthering Heights and catch the last hours of Edgar Linton. [29] After the death of her father, Heathcliff comes for Katie and takes her to Wuthering Heights. A month later, her husband dies. According to the will, written by Linton, all his property passes to his father. Katie lost not only the Skvortsov Manor, which already belonged to Linton, but also the money that her father put aside in her name, since, according to the laws of that time, all the wife's dowry becomes the property of her husband. She was completely at the mercy of Heathcliff. However, the grief of the enemies did not calm the soul of the avenger: he was still tormented by mad feelings for the deceased Catherine Earnshaw [30]. Struck by adversity, Katie became embittered at all the inhabitants of Wuthering Heights. Hurton is also disgusted with her, who has not abandoned attempts to master grammar, but she still does not appreciate these efforts. This was the end of Nelly Lockwood's story [31].
He leaves the Skvortsov Manor 1802. Six months later, Lockwood visits Wuthering Heights again. There he discovers wonderful changes: Catherine is again the mistress of the Manor, and love and harmony reign between her and Harton. Young people are going to get married. Heathcliff is dead.
Shortly after Lockwood left, Katie and Hareton developed a friendship. [33] The circle is complete. Just as Katherine and Heathcliff used to be friends and suffered grudges from Hindley, so now Katie and Hareton are friends, suffering from Heathcliff. Seeing them together, something in the latter changes, he says to Nelly: “My old enemies could not defeat me. Now it would be just right to take out the insult on their children. It is within my power, and no one can interfere with me. But what is the use of that? I don't feel like striking; no need to bother yourself and raise your hand. To listen to me, it turns out that I was busy all the time only in order to finally show remarkable generosity. But this is far from the case: I simply lost the ability to enjoy destruction - and I am too lazy to destroy in vain ”[34]. The last days of his life, Heathcliff is in a strange excited state: at night he wanders the fields, does not eat, and all his thoughts are about reuniting with Catherine Earnshaw [2]. One rainy morning, Nelly, entering his room, sees that he is dead. After that, Wuthering Heights becomes a peaceful and calm place.
