Obesity is the accumulation of excess fat in the body. According to a 2016 report by the World Health Organization, more than 1.9 billion people over the age of 18 worldwide are overweight. More than 650 million of them are obese.
Overweight or obesity has become a serious problem mainly in developed countries. Fifty-six percent of people over the age of 18 in the United States, 52 percent in the United Kingdom and more than 50 percent in Israel are said to be overweight. Now the number of overweight people is growing not only in developed countries, but also in developing countries.
If I accidentally think of myself as obese while watching a TV show about obesity, I think about the harms of obesity first.
In our society, which is obsessed with appearance, many people think that being overweight is a problem of appearance. But being overweight is actually a medical problem because it can have a serious impact on human health.
Diabetes and heart disease are health problems that can result from being overweight. Being overweight also affects a person’s joints, breathing, sleep, mood, and energy levels. Thus, being overweight can affect a person’s overall quality of life
Obesity is bad news for body and mind. Not only can this make a person feel tired and uncomfortable, overloading puts extra stress on the body, especially the bones and joints of the legs. Overweight children and adolescents are more likely to develop diabetes and other health problems. Overweight adults are more likely to develop heart disease.
Today more people than ever are overweight. The “obesity epidemic” affects children and adolescents as well as adults. As a result, young people are now facing health problems that only affect adults, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.
When people consume more calories than they consume, their body stores the extra calories as fat.
A few pounds of excess body fat does not pose a health risk to many. But as people continue to consume more calories than they burn, more fat accumulates in their bodies.
Eventually, the amount of fat in the body reaches a level that can be detrimental to human health. Doctors use the term “overweight” or “obesity” to determine if someone is more likely to develop weight-related health problems.
