How important are these stories as a way of keeping the culture alive?
These fairy tales are part of the culture so it is fundamental for parents to pass them on to their kids to keep this part of the oral tradition alive. The good thing is that nowadays we have access to all of these stories in books and even on tapes. So we don't need to worry about having them disappear. However, a child will be more likely to remember and understand the importance of the story if the father or the mother tells the story, rather than if the kid listens to it on a CD.These legends and tales represent a national cultural heritage, and they can also teach young people important values. For example, the story of the Monkey King, which is also recorded in the book entitled Journey to the West, can teach young people to be honest and have respect for teachers.
