L e t’s talk about the environment around where you live.

Is pollution a problem  in your area?

I ’m  lucky - pollution  isn’t too much of a problem  w here  I  live.  I  m ean 

there is always going to be pollution - cars give off a lot - but there isn’t 

a significant am ount and we are being encouraged by the governm ent 

to reduce the pollution th at we do produce.  For example, we are being 

en co u rag ed   to  use  m ore  public  tra n sp o rt  instead  o f  driving  every­

w here.

What do you do to help protect your local environment?

Well  I walk a lot, instead of using the car unnecessarily for short jo u r­

neys,  and  I’m very aw are o f n ot w asting resources at  hom e by leaving 

the lights turned on or having the heating on w hen it isn’t needed. Plus 

I  try to  recycle  as m uch  as possible.

What kinds o f things do you recycle?

As m uch as I can really!  Glass bottles, plastic containers and cardboard 

are  the  m ain  items  th at  get  recycled.  But  I  also  try to  avoid  throwing 

clothes and shoes away;  I  take  them  to charity shops or clothes banks 

instead.
