Stylistics a resource book for students

Activity

that cries out for support from stylistics, and especially from cognitive stylistics,
because it touches on the essence of compositional technique and understanding. I
hope that the analytic activities suggested here will have begun to probe the way
Bloom’s mind style is developed by Joyce, and I will therefore leave it to you to
explain how it might be said that Bloom thinks ‘centrifugally’.
EXPLORING METAPHORS IN DIFFERENT KINDS
OF TEXTS
Continuing the cognitive-stylistic theme established in C10, this unit offers a selec-
tion of practically orientated activities for exploring in texts both metaphor and the
related trope, metonymy. The activities suggested make use of a variety of texts
because, as observed across the strand, these tropes are endemic to human thought
processes. So while literary texts feature in the unit, the activities themselves tend
to emphasise the commonality of metaphor and metonymy as important types of
figurative thought.
Metaphor and metonymy in different kinds of texts
The exercises developed in this sub-unit are more an appetiser than a main course.
What follows is a set of ten attested examples of language use which have been taken
from a variety of sources. Mixing the ‘literary’ with the manifestly ‘non-literary’, the
set, which features both metaphor and metonymy, draws in material from journalism,
song lyrics, spoken discourse and, of course, literary texts. Instructions about how
to organise your analysis follows below the examples.
