The bar graph compares the percentage of both genders who were overweight 
in Australia in each decade between 1980 and 2010.
Overall, there was an increasing tendency in the obesity levels of both males 
and females over the period, with men suffering more from gaining unnecessary 
weight than their women counterparts in each year. 
Regarding the percentage of Australian overweight men, the figure was almost 
a half in 1980, which had been followed by a slight increase by the next decade. 
The most marked growth, however, could be observed between 1990 and 2000 
when the obesity levels of males surged to a peak at more than two-thirds. The 
last ten years turned out to be negative for this trend, during which the relative 
number saw only a marginal decline. 
Almost similar increasing pattern can also be seen in the case of overweight 
females in Australia. While only a third of them suffered from obesity initially, 
this figure climbed by ten percent in each decade, and the year 2000 reported 
a half. However, the number then remained stable at this point by 2010.

People have different views as to who should be held responsible for nurturing 
children to benefit their community. While some believe teachers and school 
atmosphere are necessary ingredients from which children can learn this, I feel 
that the role of parents is more crucial in raising their children to be good 
members. 
Those who believe school is the place for children to be productive members in 
the future have some reasons for thinking so. For one thing, children can learn 
how to be disciplined at school. This is because schools often set certain rules 
to keep students organized, and if children fail to follow them, there are also 
certain punishments for either those disobeyed or their parents. Having been 
educated in such atmosphere, without bullying and teasing under the rules, 
youngsters may hopefully become better versions of themselves. Another role 
of schools has to do with teamwork projects. In fact, many schools organize 
voluntary programs, such as charity projects, and involve schoolchildren so that 
they can shape a better understanding about being generous. Undoubtedly, the 
young growing up with such mindset will be more conscious about their 
communities.
Having said that, I would argue that the role of parents is far more important. 
That young people spend the majority of their time with parents during formative 
years means parents can have more influence on making their children good 
members. The reason is that at early ages, it is generally thought to be easier 
to inject moral values to the mindset of children, making parents more 
accountable for this task to raise their infants with more society-concerned 
ideas. Also, it is common knowledge that parents are generally seen as role 
models by children. Thus, it is parents who should set good examples of 
benefitting to their community, by contributing donations and being respectful 
as well as polite in public places. Imitating their loved ones, those children then 
stand a better chance to become more productive members, I think. 
To sum up, with the presence of strict discipline and certain projects, schools 
may seem to be more effective in preparing prospective people to benefit 
society. However, I firmly believe parents have more edge as they can teach 
young children in a very critical period and use their own examples.
