International trade in tourism services is on the rise 

From 1995 to 2017, worldwide tourist arrivals grew 4.4% p.a., from 524 million to 1,341 million visitors. 

Growth over that period was steady and resilient, with small falls during periods of crisis and recovery 

following soon after. Indeed, the number of international arrivals grew at an even faster pace of 5.0% p.a.

over 2010‐2017. International tourism expenditures as a share of total imports, as well as receipts as a 

fraction  of  total  exports,  fell  during  the  period  leading  to  the  global  financial  crisis,  but  have  both 

recovered over the past decade, each at around 6.5 percent in 2017; see Figure 2 (a).
