theoretical overview of academic leadership and management in
the academe is
presented, followed by a more detailed examination of leadership and management at
departmental level in the context of the changing culture of the
university and the various
demands placed upon leaders and managers. Aspects of departmental leadership
discussed include role
ambiguity, role conflict, exercise of power and
leadership styles
appropriate for an academic department as well as the role and responsibilities of the
head of department.
