Judo (from Japanese ju - gentleness, do - way) -is a kind of a combat sport, which allows sprints as well as joint locks (only on hands) and chokeholds. Sportsmen in kimono (long jacket with belt and pants) fight on special floor-mats - tatami.
From a standing position, it involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw your opponents onto their backs. On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin your opponents down to the ground, control them, and apply various chokeholds or joint locks untU^ubmission (30 sec). Technical actions are valued as follows: the total victory -"ippon" (10:0), "vazari" (7:0), "kzho¹ (5:0), "koka" (3:0).
The international judo Federation UJN was founded in 1951 and now consists of 187 National Federations (2002). It has been in the Olympic program since 1964 (except 1968). In the Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992) judo competitions were held for the first time among women in 8 weight categories. In the competitions a participant leaves the field after the first defeat. Sportsmen who lost in the preliminary combats to the sportsmen who will later become semifinalists contest bronze medals, which will be given to the both participants in every weight category.
