Organization vision → Department/Unit objective → Individual employee objective
If, for some reason, your organization doesn’t have a clearly articulated vision, you can still 
develop one for your unit or department of responsibility. Use that vision as your touchstone 
against which to determine priorities and set objectives. 
In addition, you need to be aware of your own manager’s priorities—ideally, each of these will be 
aligned and will support one another. If you have several priorities and still don’t know which is 
most important, consider the costs and benefits of the competing priorities, and choose the one 
with the greatest benefit relative to its cost. Finally, to successfully set objectives, use your good 
judgment and trust your intuition.

How to Prioritize 

Know your organization’s priorities.

Know your manager’s priorities.

Weigh the costs and benefits of competing priorities.

Determine available resources: staffing, time, and budget. Do you have available staff? Do 
they have the necessary expertise? Do they have enough time and money?

Use good judgment: Are you too focused on any one area of your unit? Is this particular 
project raising a red flag for some known or unknown reason?
