increasing since 2000. It represents officially recorded remittances. The true size of
remittances, including unrecorded flows through formal and informal channels, is believed
to be larger (Migration and Remittances Fact Book, 2008). Moreover, the Central Bank of
Egypt (CBE) records higher figures for remittances, reaching US$8.5 billion in 2007/2008
an increase of 35 per cent compared to 2006/2007 when remittances recorded were US$6.3
billion (CBE, 2008) (see Figure 2).
