This interaction is relatively easy to understand through traditional ways of teaching grammar as the meaning behind the sentences are literal and easy to interpret.
"Would you like a cup of coffee, Abby?"
"It'll stop me sleeping."
This interaction, however, would be more likely to confuse someone struggling with understanding grammar. The response that coffee would stop Abby sleeping is a refusal of the offer, but without understanding the context, register and function of grammar that comes from a communicative approach to teaching grammar, this would be more difficult.
The 'play way' method of teaching english grammar
The play way method of teaching English grammar is also geared up to make grammar more enjoyable and to be retained by students as easily as possible. This method of teaching is also very beneficial to ESL students and is commonly used in these classrooms.
The play way method of teaching English grammar is a concept that grammar is taught more efficiently when games are used. Language games are used in the classroom to help students to understand how to use grammar effectively.
This supports the idea that rote learning grammar is not the most successful way for students to learn the rules. Making it fun and more interesting is more likely to resonate with children and help them to retain what they've learnt. By using games, children get to practice their grammar skills regularly in a fun way that shakes up their lessons. It can encourage cooperative learning between students or groups of students or make the environment more competitive so they try harder. Using the play way method of teaching English grammar needs to be done in a way that doesn't just fill time. It needs to be at the right level for the age group, as well as being fun.
English grammar is known for being challenging to learn. Students who are native speakers will benefit from language games but ESL students will really find these activities helpful in getting to grips with grammar. It's a fun and supportive way of learning a language.
The benefits of teaching grammar
As mentioned before, a solid understanding of grammar will give children a great foundation for communication, both written and verbal. This is the main benefit of teaching grammar to children in school and at home. However, there are four main areas in total that highlight the main benefits of teaching grammar, two of which have already been mentioned. Teaching grammar will benefit children in the following areas:

  Listening: understanding grammar means that children will be able to listen to and decipher speech using syntax, tense and word choice. Without the knowledge of grammar, children would not be able to listen to and understand the extra dimension of meaning that grammar gives our speech.

  Speaking: Just like with listening, children would not be able to use the full range of English if they did not have a solid understanding of grammar. They would not be able to accurately use tense, for example, which could affect the overall meaning of what's being said.
  
• 
  Writing: Whilst listening and speaking are more widely used on a day-to-day basis, being able to write accurately requires knowledge of grammar. This benefits children more in an academic sense as a good level of writing is required to excel in all subjects.
  
• 
  Reading: As with writing, a good understanding of grammar benefits our reading skills. Without this, we could not pick up on grammatical cues that influence meaning and the authors intent.
