COMPETENCE AS A WAY OF PROTECTING AGAINST
THE EFFECTS OF ELECTROMAGNETIC POLLUTION
V. V. Chikin, Yu. V. Zhukova
Ulyanovsk state technical university, Ulyanovsk
A review of the references shows that research on electromagnetic pollu-
tion of the environment is carrying out. Thus, in [1] the regulation of electric and
magnetic fields in Russia is considered in sufficient detail. Works [2, 3] are de-
voted to studying electromagnetic radiation of mobile phones on human health.
Description of the problem of electromagnetic fields in urban environment is
given in reference [4].
The aim of this work is to investigate competence
as a way to protect
against the effects of electromagnetic pollution in the environment. To achieve
it, it is necessary to assess the level of knowledge of electromagnetic pollution
of a certain group of people (a sample is taken), to analyze the results and draw
appropriate conclusions. The research method is questionnaire: an author's ques-
tionnaire "What do you know about electromagnetic pollution" was prepared.
The sample of research: the students of higher educational institutions of power
engineering specialties were selected as respondents. This choice is explained by
the fact that during the learning process the students of power engineering spe-
cialties face electromagnetic fields, their regulation and influence on human
health, etc.
Selected test results of the author's questionnaire to determine the level of
competence in the field of electromagnetic pollution are shown in Figures 1-4.
The following conclusions were made based on the results of the survey:
the concept "Electromagnetic field", sources of fields and their application
are familiar to 85% of respondents of all courses. However, the same can-
not be said about the term "Electromagnetic pollution" which is unfamil-
iar to the second-year students at all. However, there is an increase in the
number of positive responses to the question from third- and fourth-year
students (see Figure 1). This indicates that the problem of electromagnetic
pollution is touched upon in the
course of study;
the results of the questionnaire presented in Figure 2 show that the re-
spondents are not aware of the degree of danger of electromagnetic devic-
es used at home;
an important aspect in solving the problem of electromagnetic pollution is
awareness, as even the simplest measures may save someone's life. The
highest percentage of knowledge of regulatory documents, recommenda-
143
tions of specialists in the field of protection against the action of an elec-
tromagnetic field is observed among the second-year students – 33% (see
Figure 3). The third-year students are not at all familiar with them. In the
authors' opinion, this indicates that today people do not fully recognize
the existence of the problem of
electromagnetic pollution;

about 98% of respondents know that electromagnetic fields can have a
harmful effect on human health, but more than half of respondents do not
attempt to reduce or limit their negative effects on their health (see Figure
4). The question arises: what is the reason for the fact that a person is re-
