-Responded to students’ characteristics: over years, these best teachers paid attention to their students’ characteristics that re-appear with every generation and refer to students’ prior knowledge of the subject, their dominant learning patterns, their expectations of the course etc. and adjust the course to these crucial traits.(ibid) ESP is generally based on the students’ needs and combines the specific topics with linguistic aspects of the course. In ideal conditions where students’ groups are organized on the basis of students’ knowledge of English, ESP teachers can concentrate on the students’ strong multiple intelligences and apply respective learning strategies. In addition, they can introduce activities for fostering other multiple intelligences, thus enabling the students to evolve in this respect.
Our example: over the years, as the same conditions re-appear (large groups of students - over 50 and different level of knowledge) we have to design the course to suit all students. Thus we combine easier and more difficult activities considering one and the same topic.
-Used good assessment activities: they used such assessment activities that not only grade students, but to really enhance their learning. Thus they: a) periodically have their students assessed their own learning, b) provide frequent feedback on student’s work, c) use well developed rubrics to evaluate complex projects. ESP teachers should also follow these examples and periodically ask students to assess their knowledge after the lesson and then before the next one begins.
Our example: From time to time, very briefly, at the end of the lesson, students are asked to assess the effect on the class on their knowledge by using the grades from 1 to 5. This activity is done anonymously; using individual activities like note-taking and paraphrasing, we always get a feedback on the students’ progress, and finally, we always encourage students to take part in a research and presentation of the results which give the opportunity to asses different types of skills.
