The phlogiston theory of combustion was still prevalent in Russia in the middle of the eighteenth ccntury. It came into conflict with the corpuscular theory put forward by Lomonosov. His experiments on the calcination of metals helped Lomonosov to find evidence against it and led him to the discovery of the main law of chcmistry — the law of conservation of mass and energy.
