Assessment For Learning. According to Orsmond and Merry , there is a common lack of understanding between the learner and the teacher due to the teacher’s feedback being ambiguous or cryptic. An article by Jonsson arrived at a similar conclusion. Jonsson concluded that teacher’s feedbacks were often of questionable quality due to one-liner comments that did not provide sufficient information to be helpful. Illegible writing by the teachers and usage of academic terminology and technical jargons were other reasons quoted . As described by Shute , formative feedback used by teachers is a form of scaffolding that enables learners to engage in more advanced thinking and activities that they might not be able to complete without such help. Timing is key as scaffolding is gradually removed. For example, should the teacher provide immediate or delayed feedback? An interesting study by Schroth concluded that delayed feedback is particularly useful in a conceptual task and for promoting the transfer of knowledge, whereas for immediate feedback, a study by Corbett & Anderson concluded that it is more efficient and suited for procedural skills.
