Sample 1: Just a couple of months ago a brand new multiplex movie theater opened not far from where I live. You know, nowadays cinemas spring like mushrooms after the rain... So this event could have gone unnoticed if it hadn't been for one thing.
The new cinema was built on the site which used to accommodate an old abandoned building and the grounds. It had a reputation for being a dangerous place even in the daytime, let alone at night as was a gathering spot for criminals and homeless people. People tried to stay away from this area. What's more, this dilapidated building was an eyesore of our neighbourhood. So everyone was happy when it was demolished and a new building was constructed.
Now it's a great place for movie-lovers. People no longer need to go to the city centre to have a nice evening out. It shows films from around the world. And the city council has already announced that the cinema is going to hold various film festivals too. It has quickly become the main social gathering spot in my neighbourhood.
So, this new public facility has made my neighbourhood a much better, nicer and, what's important, safer place to live. Sample 2: I'm going to describe a high-rise building which appeared right in the centre of our city last year. It's called X, and everybody says it's the tallest skyscraper in the country.
I remember that when I first saw the construction site, I thought it would be nothing more than a concrete cookie-cutter monster, which would just block out the sun. Thank God, my fears didn't materialise, and it appeared to be a very beautiful modern building with original design. It has about 40 storeys. And it's made of tinted glass, shiny steel and concrete like almost all modern buildings nowadays.
This building serves several purposes. On the bottom floor there's a shopping centre, parking space and something else. I don't remember what. It also accommodates some cafes, numerous shops and offices. There are residential units on top floors. Some of them are luxurious and really expensive. There's also a restaurant with a panoramic view of the city. It's a wonderful place for romantic dates.
I like this high-rise building because I perceive it as a symbol of progress in the city. Apart from that, it has become is a notable landmark, which attracts tourists.
